How to Choose an SEO Agency in India: The 3-Filter Method

India's SEO market runs from ₹8K freelancers to ₹1L+ retainers — and price tells you almost nothing. Verify their own rankings, attributable numbers, and a written 90-day plan instead.

How to Choose an SEO Agency in India: The 3-Filter Method

Quick answer: Choose an India SEO agency by verifying three things nobody can fake: their own rankings (do they rank for the services they sell?), attributable case-study numbers (traffic and leads, with the method explained), and a written 90-day plan specific to your site before you sign. Price bands matter less than fit — a ₹25K/month specialist beats a ₹60K/month generalist for most SMBs.

Why SEO agency selection goes wrong in India

India has one of the world's largest SEO supply markets — thousands of agencies and freelancers at every price point, from ₹8K/month to ₹1L+ retainers (see our 2026 India SEO pricing guide for the full bands). The dispersion means the usual buying signals — price, team size, client logos — carry almost no information. Two agencies quoting ₹30K/month can differ by 10x in outcome. Selection has to be evidence-based.

The 3-filter shortlist method

Filter 1: Do they rank themselves?

Search the commercial terms an agency would target for itself — "seo services [their city]", "seo company india". An agency that can't rank its own site in a market it knows perfectly is unlikely to rank yours in a market it's learning. Check that their blog demonstrates current knowledge: AI Overviews, E-E-A-T, entity SEO — not "10 SEO tips" recycled from 2019.

Filter 2: Can they show attributable numbers?

Ask for two case studies with: starting point, actions taken, timeline, and results measured in Search Console or analytics — not a screenshot of a ranking tool. Then ask one question: "What would you have done differently on this project?" Real practitioners have an answer; resellers don't.

Filter 3: Will they write a plan before you pay?

A serious agency will look at your site and give you a one-page 90-day priority list in the sales process — technical fixes, content targets, expected checkpoints. If the pre-sale answer is a generic package grid ("10 keywords, 20 backlinks, 4 blogs"), the delivery will be a generic package too. Deliverable-count packages are the single most reliable predictor of low-quality SEO.

Questions that separate practitioners from resellers

  1. Which of my pages would you work on first, and why?
  2. How do you decide between creating a new page and improving an existing one?
  3. What's your link acquisition method — and can I see three links you built for another client?
  4. How has AI search (AI Overviews, ChatGPT) changed what you deliver? (See our take on GEO — any 2026 agency needs one.)
  5. What happens in a Google core update if my traffic drops 30%?
  6. What do you need from me each month, and what happens if I can't provide it?

Red flags that should end the conversation

  • Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed timelines. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee positions. This is the #1 tell.
  • Secret methods. "Proprietary techniques we can't share" almost always means purchased links or spun content that will burn your domain.
  • Reporting = ranking screenshots. You should get Search Console-verified clicks, impressions and conversions, tied to the work done that month.
  • They own the content. Everything written for your site must be owned by you, published on your domain, and stay with you if you leave.
  • Instant results talk. Honest agencies say 3–6 months to meaningful movement. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is selling something else.

Retainer vs. project vs. hourly — which model fits

  • Monthly retainer (most common): right when you want compounding growth — continuous technical work, content and links. Commit for 6 months, review at 3.
  • Fixed project: right for a one-time need — a migration, a technical audit, a penalty recovery. Clear scope, clear end.
  • Hourly consulting: right when you have an in-house team that needs direction, not hands. Rare in India but increasingly available.

Making the final call

Take your two finalists and compare the 90-day plans they wrote — not their decks. The better plan is usually obvious: it's the one that talks about your pages, your competitors and your conversion path instead of deliverable counts. Then start with a 3-month scope and hold them to the checkpoints they set themselves.

If you want to benchmark us with the same filters, our SEO services for India and global markets page shows exactly what an engagement includes, and every claim links to a case study with numbers. Bring the 6 questions above to the call — we enjoy them.
