What We Changed on Client Sites After the Latest Google Core Update
When rankings shifted across several client accounts in the same week, we compared notes across every affected site. Three patterns explained most of the movement — here is what we adjusted.
When rankings shift noticeably across several of our client accounts in the same week, that's the signal to stop and compare notes across every affected site rather than treating each as an isolated case. Three clear patterns explained the majority of the movement we saw.
Pattern 1: Sites with thin "programmatic" pages lost visibility
Pages generated from templates with minimal unique content per page — common in local-service and directory-style sites — lost rankings more consistently than pages with substantive unique text, even when the underlying data was accurate and useful.
Pattern 2: First-hand experience signals became more valuable
Pages showing clear evidence of direct, first-hand experience — specific numbers, named processes, original images rather than stock photography — held or gained rankings more often than purely research-compiled content, even when the research-based content was well-written.
Pattern 3: Sites with strong topical depth outperformed isolated high-authority pages
A single excellent page on a topic performed worse, post-update, than a comparable page sitting within a well-linked cluster of related content on the same site — reinforcing that Google is weighting overall topical authority more heavily than isolated page quality.
What we adjusted for affected clients
- Added specific, first-hand detail (case examples, original data, named methodology) to templated pages showing declines
- Prioritized building out topic clusters around pages that held steady, rather than creating more isolated content
- Replaced generic stock imagery with original photography or screenshots on the highest-traffic affected pages
The bigger lesson
Chasing the specific algorithm change itself is usually less useful than understanding the underlying quality signal it's reinforcing. In this case, that signal was consistently "demonstrated first-hand expertise," which is a durable target to build toward regardless of the next update.
