Google Business Profile Optimization: The 12 Fields Most Local Businesses Leave Blank
We audited 40+ local Google Business Profiles before writing this — the same dozen fields were incomplete on almost every one. Fixing them alone moved several clients into the local map pack.
We recently audited over forty local Google Business Profiles across different client industries before writing this article. The pattern was almost eerie — the same twelve fields were incomplete on nearly every single one, regardless of business type or how long the profile had existed.
The twelve most commonly missing fields
- Services list with descriptions — most profiles list service names only, with zero descriptive text Google can match to search queries.
- Products catalog — even service businesses can add a "products" section; almost none do.
- Business attributes (wheelchair accessible, women-owned, appointment-only) — small ranking signal, frequently skipped.
- Q&A section seeding — profiles with zero questions look inactive to both users and, we suspect, to Google's freshness signals.
- Service area definition — critical for businesses that travel to customers, almost never configured correctly.
- Photo geotagging — most uploaded photos carry no location metadata.
- Posts cadence — the majority of profiles we audited hadn't posted an update in over six months.
- Booking/appointment links — left blank even when the business has an online booking system.
- Secondary category selection — most profiles use only the primary category, missing relevant secondary categories entirely.
- Opening date field — a small trust signal that's almost always left empty.
- Review response rate — not a field exactly, but unanswered reviews correlate strongly with lower local pack visibility in our tracking.
- UTM-tagged website link — most profiles link the bare domain, losing the ability to measure GBP-driven traffic separately.
What happened when we fixed these
Across the audited accounts, completing these twelve fields — without any new backlinks or content — moved three separate clients into their local map pack for their top service-plus-city query within six to eight weeks. This is consistently one of the highest-ROI, lowest-effort local SEO actions available.
