How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in Pune: 12 Questions That Expose Weak Ones

A practical selection method for Pune's crowded agency market: shortlist 3, ask 12 questions, score on proof and accountability — plus the red flags that should end any conversation.

How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in Pune: 12 Questions That Expose Weak Ones

Quick answer: Shortlist 3 agencies, ask each the same 12 questions below, and score them on proof (client numbers, not logos), team (who actually works on your account) and accountability (one metric they'll own in 90 days). Ignore awards pages and "trusted by 500 brands" walls — in Pune's crowded agency market, verified case-study numbers are the only reliable signal.

Step 1 — Decide what you're actually buying

"Digital marketing" is not one product. Before speaking to any Pune agency, write down one sentence: "In 6 months I want [X qualified leads / ₹Y revenue / Z ranking] and I can spend ₹N/month." Agencies quote radically different scopes to vague briefs — a written goal collapses the quotes into comparable offers. If you don't yet know your budget bands, start with our Pune digital marketing cost guide.

Step 2 — Build a shortlist of 3 (not 10)

  • Search like your customer. Agencies that rank for their own commercial keywords in Pune can probably rank you too. An agency you only found through a cold call ranks for nothing.
  • Check their case studies for numbers. "Increased brand visibility" is not a result. "300% organic traffic in 6 months, 5x lead volume" is — and you should ask how it was measured.
  • Match size to size. A 400-person agency will route your ₹30K retainer to its most junior team. A 3-person freelancer collective can't cover SEO + paid + creative. Mid-size specialist teams fit most Pune SMBs best.

Step 3 — The 12 questions that expose weak agencies

  1. Who — by name and role — will work on my account each week?
  2. How many client accounts does that person handle?
  3. Which one metric will you commit to improving in 90 days?
  4. Show me a monthly report you sent a real client. What decision did it drive?
  5. What's your process when a campaign underperforms for two straight months?
  6. Do I own my ad accounts, analytics, creatives and website changes? (Only acceptable answer: yes.)
  7. What does the notice period look like, and what handover do I get?
  8. Have you worked in my industry? What was different about it?
  9. How do you attribute leads — last click, first touch, CRM-verified?
  10. What do you need from my team every month for this to work?
  11. Which services do you outsource or white-label?
  12. Why should I not pick the agency quoting 40% less?

Strong agencies answer all twelve without flinching. Weak ones get vague around questions 3, 5 and 6.

Step 4 — Red flags that end the conversation

  • Guaranteed rankings or "#1 on Google in 30 days". Nobody controls Google. Guarantee language signals either inexperience or churn-and-burn tactics.
  • They won't name the team. If the pitch is delivered by a founder you'll never see again, ask who runs delivery.
  • They keep ownership of ad accounts or analytics. This is a lock-in tactic, and rebuilding history later is expensive.
  • Price with no scope. "₹20K all-inclusive" without deliverables, hours or a named channel plan is unpriceable — and unaccountable.
  • No questions about your business. An agency that pitches before asking about your margins, sales cycle and capacity is selling a package, not a plan.

Step 5 — Run a 90-day trial scope

Don't sign 12-month contracts upfront. Agree a 90-day engagement with one primary metric, a defined channel mix and a review gate. Good agencies accept this readily — the first quarter is where they prove the model. Use the review to decide whether to expand scope (more channels, more content) or exit cleanly with your accounts intact.

Local vs. remote: does the agency need to be in Pune?

For local businesses (clinics, restaurants, real estate), a Pune agency's market familiarity genuinely helps — local search behaviour, area-level targeting and Marathi/Hindi creative nuance matter. For B2B and SaaS selling nationally or globally, capability beats postcode: judge the team and the numbers, not the office address.
